Case VeviApp

Vevi is a new mobile app that takes people out into nature with a quiz. The quiz is played on smartphones or tablets in park environments all over Western Uusimaa. Vevi targets all ages, but it is primarily aimed at activating young people and school children.

Vevi – I came and I saw Western Uusimaa

Vevi takes its name from the Latin phrase veni, vidi, vici that formed the idea; veni vidi Western Uusimaa, as in I came and I saw Western Uusimaa.

How the idea was born

A couple of years ago JCO’s Juha Javanainen got an idea: A mobile game played at a recreational area named Ramsholmen in Tammisaari. He introduced the concept to photographer Christoffer Relander and it resulted in a collaborative project with the financer Västnyländska kultursamfundet.

In 2018, two tracks were made, one at Ramsholmen in Tammisaari and the other at Pumppulahti in Karjaa. This year (2019) tracks have been opened in Hanko, Inkoo and the Raseborg Castle, and more tracks are in planning.

The idea of the Vevi app is for a player to go to a game destination in Western Uusimaa, follow the game route and answer questions. During the walk, one learns a lot of new things and sees the scenery with new eyes. There are six different topics: visual arts, music, local cultural history, general history, sports, and nature & environment. The app collects scores for each track and subject. The questions are updated a few times a year to keep the gaming experience fresh.

Originally, the application was only in Swedish, but it has been expanded to Finnish and English and is therefore well-suited for tourists traveling around Western Uusimaa.

What we did

JCO was responsible for the technical implementation of the application and Christoffer Relander for the layout. Annette Ström, Executive Director of the Västnyländska Kultursamfundet Association and Pamela Andersson, Children’s Culture Coordinator, were also part of the project’s production team.

Vevi works on both Android and iPhone. The backend is a WordPress-based site that maintains the tracks and the question database.

Vevi’s production went fast and well. Working with the app was exciting for the team and brought a welcome change to website projects.

Vevi can be downloaded for free online from veviapp.fi or your application store.

What the client says

Annette Ström

Västnyländska kultursamfundet

“We’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the Vevi app, and it has been used by people of all ages, from schoolchildren to city employees. For example, it has been good for schoolchildren to be able to choose the topic of the questions. If history is of less interest, you can swap to music-related questions.

A lot of things can be learned through Vevi. Another great thing is that thanks to the app, students’ days are not always only sitting still on the school bench, but instead, they can go outside and learn. This is a bit like geocaching, but it includes learning new things.

We have received additional funding for the project, so in the summer of 2019 we opened four new tracks and four more are planned for next summer. We are pleased with the project and the way things have moved forward. ”
